More about the camp

An all-girls camp, on purpose

Girls basketball in Kelowna too often means being the only girl in a gym full of boys. The Fall Tip-Off Girls Edition is a separate camp with its own courts, its own coaches and its own schedule, so players spend the week competing with and against other girls. For a lot of players that is the difference between trying something and actually enjoying it.

Three ways to join, including a free one

Grades 1 to 6 can play a completely free two-day camp on August 25 and 26, from 2:45 to 4:15pm. There is no catch and no card required, just a reserved spot. The same age group can also play a paid two-day camp on August 27 and 28 for $75, running 2:15 to 4:15pm on the 27th and 4:30 to 6:30pm on the 28th. Grades 7 to 12 play all four days, August 25 to 28, from 6:30 to 8:30pm, for $150.

The free camp exists because the biggest barrier to girls playing is usually not interest, it is committing money to something your daughter has never tried. Two days costs you nothing and tells you whether she wants a season.

What the days look like

Grades 1 to 3 and Grades 4 to 6 train on separate courts so the drills match the age. Sessions mix skill work with games rather than lining up for layups. Everything runs at Kelowna Christian School.

Guest coaches: a WNBA player and a Team Canada pro

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe, who has played in the WNBA and for the Canadian national team as an Olympian, is the guest coach for the girls groups and leads the girls sessions on August 28. Jadon Cohee, a professional guard who has played for Team Canada, at the NCAA Division 1 level and at UBC, leads the Grade 7 to 12 girls session on August 27.

What to bring, and what if she has never played

Indoor court shoes and a water bottle. We supply basketballs. No experience is expected, and in the younger grades most players are new. Parents are welcome to stay and watch. Spots are limited by court space and the free sessions fill fastest.

After camp, girls play in our 3v3 league, which includes a dedicated Grades 3 to 6 girls division on Saturdays at St. Joseph’s. See girls basketball in Kelowna for everything we run.
